Leandra Medine, the girl who stands behind the Man Repeller

Leandra Medine is an American author and fashion blogger best known for The Man Repeller, a humorous website for serious fashion.

man-repeller017Medine launched Man Repeller as a junior college in 2010 at a time when blogging was still in its infancy and the term “influencer” had yet to be coined. She quickly generated a cult following by dispensing her daily fashion wisdom on “trends that women love and men hate” coupled with her irreverent social commentary. With an ethos that “an interest in fashion doesn’t minimize one’s intellect,” Medine emerged as a preeminent voice in an industry notoriously difficult to penetrate and long-dominated by legacy status.

Leandra explained the title of her blog: “Good fashion is about pleasing women, not men, so as it happens, the trends that we love, men hate. And that is fantastic.”But perhaps what differentiates Man Repeller most is the way Medine marries impeccable high fashion aesthetics with a comedic approach. “I think what’s so interesting for people is that I don’t take it so seriously and yet I am still immersed in the (fashion) industry,” she says.

“I’ve learned everything from scratch. I had no idea what I was doing when I started out,” says Leandra Medine, creator of the satirical style site Man Repeller. Today Medine’s name and her signature sense of style are synonymous with the New York fashion scene and her inimitable voice has cemented her status as one of the industry’s most formidable forces.

In 2012, Medine was featured in Forbes’s “Top 30 Under 30” as one of the year’s “most influential trendsetters,” while The Man Repeller was recognized in TIME’s “25 Best Blogs of 2012”, and received “Best Overall Blog” at the 2012 Bloglovin’ Awards. In that year, Medine also topped Adweek’s “Fashion Power 25” which recognizes those “who truly mattered in fashion and style,” beating the likes of Lady Gaga, Michelle Obama, and Anna Wintour.” In 2013, Medine was featured in Fast Company Magazine’s “100 Most Creative People” issue.

In his review of Medine’s book, Simon Doonan, creative ambassador of Barneys stated: “Leandra is a sick, twisted fashion addict and guess what? There is no rehab. As this book shows, she is doomed to be stylish and groovy and hilarious for the rest of her life.””

2016 then saw the launch of Man Repeller’s footwear line, MR by Man Repeller. She has also collaborated with a long list of fashion brands and retailers, including Maje, Michael Kors , Gryphon, Del Toro, Dannijo, Saks Fifth Avenue and others. And it’s these collaborations that net her the bulk of her income.

Medine lives in New York with her husband, Abie J. Cohen, and their two daughters.
