Lisbon hosted for the second time the largest technology event in Europe, the Web Summit. We were there for the second time, and once again we were not disappointed. More tired but full of inspiration and desire to do more and better.

The Web Summit is undoubtedly a source of constant inspiration, after watching founders and CEOs of the world’s largest technology companies, astronauts, robots who can keep up a conversation and sometimes with humor, Victoria’s Secret models, actors, famous magicians, political leaders who share with us their story, sometimes a story of failure before their success, their challenges, their achievements and how their revolutionary ideas have changed our daily life, and this makes us believe in ourselves and gave us the strength to try to make a difference in this world.

The Web Summit is truly a world inside our world. It’s a world apart, it’s a world in which most people don’t live, only use, for example when you take a selfie and post it on Instagram. But when we enter in this world, that at least for us is so different we realize that there are people who work everyday for a better world and to completely change the reality that we have today.

And that’s what we found, innovative and very promising ideas, powerful speeches that made us think, and above all, that a new era is coming and it’s trying to be more aware of political, economic and humanitarian problems and crises.

Don’t think that the Web Summit is just for your Hi-tech geek friend, who is a programmer or designer and always speaks in code that is completely impossible to understand. For us, the Web Summit is for everyone, for everyone who wants to grow, to know more, to meet new people, and new realities and for everyone who wants to be inspire to change their lives or to take the necessary step to quick off their dream project.

We attend a lot of talks, but we also missed a lot of them, for lack of time, because some of the talks that we wanted to attend were taking place simultaneously, or because they were in distant stages of each other and it was impossible to arrive on time. Fortunately we have always the possibility to watch them online. Of course it’ s not the same thing, because after the talks sometimes it’s possible to speak with the speakers which makes everything much more interesting. That’s what happened to us, for example, with the Portuguese model Sara Sampaio, who everyone asks me if she’s really beautiful? Of course she is, she’s a real hottie, otherwise she was not chosen for the demanding standards of Victoria’s Secret for example, but in addition she is intelligent and very conscious of her influence and also of the power of social media that she uses to denounce the abuses that exist in the fashion industry and of which she has also been a victim. Always smiling, the audience went crazy when she entered and made a point of greeting us in Portuguese, there were many applause and we realized that the Portuguese audience  admires her and feels pride in her work across borders.

Suzy Menkes was a pleasant surprise, very calm and attentive, she contrasted with the general rush of Web Summit, in which in two words we have to try to explain what it can only be explained in six or seven sentences. With Suzy Menkes it’s like we’re talking with a more experienced friend who is sitting there quietly just to hear us and to give us some answers, and after that she will also ask for our opinion. Soon we hope to be able to give news from our conversation 😉

For the second consecutive year, BMW was the official partner of the 2017 Web Summit for Mobility. BMW marked its presence with the models I3, I8, and I8 Memphis Style edition and this last one could not be more spectacular, designed by the creative minds of Garage Italia Customs whose Chairman and creative director is Lapo Elkann, considered by Vanity Fair magazine one of the best dressed men in 2008. The Memphis I8 is clearly provocative and was inspired by movements like Art Deco and its surprising geometrical shapes, Pop Art with its bright colors and Kitsch as a way to detach from the minimalist design of the 70s. A stylish car that unites fashion, design and technology in an amazing car.

Whoever was waiting to have a good night sleep to recharge energies for the next day could not be more mistaken. The Web Summit continued through the night, in the bars of the pink street or Chiado, where you could hear  English every where, the official language of Web Summit, and the atmosphere is a contagious animation. It was in this relaxed and more leisurely atmosphere, in stylish bars, imagine that we went to Figaro’s barber shop where some men were making a vintage haircut seating in vintage barber chairs while others were talking and drinking beer that they took from a vintage refrigerator full of stickers (here it’s all vintage up to the way you make a razor-sharp beard and warm towel), that many of the contacts are made and new partnerships are formed. Web Summit night is definitely a thing not to be missed  not only for the fun but also for the net-working that is certainly built here.

Al Gore, former Vice President of the United States was the last speaker, after all Paddy Cosgrave wanted to end Web Summit in a big way, and he succeeded. With a powerful and charismatic speech Al Gore spoke about global warming and how the US despite President Trump remain part of the Paris agreement. He was applauded several times and in the end he left the audience in a standing ovation. It was such a speech that when the Portuguese President Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa took the stage, he said that it would be difficult to make a speech after Al Gore’s talk. But since he seems to have captivated the Portuguese public for quite some time, President Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa was affectionately received and also strongly applauded during his speech.

And so the 2nd edition of the Web Summit comes to an end,  an  huge and amazing event this year, full of people with new ideas and, more importantly, the right energy to implement them.

Lisboa recebeu pela segunda vez o maior evento tecnológico da Europa, o Web Summit. Pela segunda vez nós estivemos lá, e mais uma vez não saímos desanimadas. Mais cansadas mas cheias de inspiração e vontade de fazer mais e melhor.

O Web Summit é sem duvida, uma fonte de inspiração constante, depois de assistirmos a fundadores e CEOs das maiores empresas de tecnologia do mundo, astronautas, Robots que conseguem manter uma conversa e por vezes com humor, modelos da victoria´s Secret, artistas de cinema, mágicos famosos, lideres políticos que partilham connosco a sua história, muitas vezes de fracasso antes do sucesso, dos seus desafios, das suas conquistas e de como as suas ideias revolucionárias mudaram a nosso dia a dia, ficamos a pensar eu também consigo, eu também quero fazer a diferença neste mundo.

O Web Summit é realmente um mundo dentro do nosso mundo. É um mundo à parte, é um mundo em que a maioria das pessoas não vive, apenas usufrui, por exemplo, quando tira uma selfie e a publica no Instagram. Mas quando entramos neste mundo que pelo menos para nós é tão diferente percebemos que há pessoas que trabalham diariamente para um mundo melhor e para mudar completamente a realidade que temos hoje.

 Foi isso que encontrámos, ideias inovadoras e muito promissoras, discursos poderosos que nos dão que pensar, e acima de tudo que uma nova era está a chegar e que tenta ser mais consciente relativamente aos problemas e às crises politicas, económicas e humanitárias.

Não pensem que o Web Summit é apenas para o vosso amigo geek todo hi-tech, que é programador ou designer e fala quase sempre em código completamente impossível de perceber. Para nós o Web Summit é para todos, todos os que tenham vontade de crescer, saber mais, conhecer novas pessoas, e novas realidades e que se queiram inspirar para mudar de vida ou levar o empurrão que faltava para se atirar de cabeça no projecto com que há tanto tempo sonhava.

Foram muitas as talks a que assistimos, e foram muitas as que ficaram por ver, por falta de tempo claro, visto muitas vezes estarem a decorrer em simultâneo, ou por estarem em palcos distantes um do outro e ser impossível chegar a tempo, felizmente temos sempre a possibilidade de assistir online às que ficaram por ver, mas claro que não é a mesma coisa, porque depois das talks por vezes é possível falar com os speakers o que torna tudo muito mais interessante. Foi o que nos aconteceu por exemplo com a modelo portuguesa Sara Sampaio, que toda a gente me pergunta se é realmente gira ao vivo? Claro que é, é uma verdadeira brasa, caso contrário não era escolhida para os exigentes padrões da Victoria’s Secret por exemplo, mas para além disso é inteligente e muito consciente do poder que tem e também do poder das redes sociais que faz questão de usar para denunciar os abusos que existem na industria da moda e dos quais também já foi vitima. Sempre sorridente e muito bem disposta, deixou o publico em delírio quando entrou e fez questão de nos cumprimentar em português, foram muitos e calorosos os aplausos percebeu-se que o publico português a admira e sente orgulho no seu trabalho além fronteiras.

Suzy Menkes revelou-se uma agradável surpresa, muito calma e atenta, contrastava com a correria geral que se vive no Web Summit, em que em duas palavras temos que tentar explicar aquilo que só se explica em seis ou sete frases. Com a Suzy Menkes é como se estivéssemos a falar com uma amiga mais experiente que está ali calmamente só para nos ouvir e que depois de responder às nossas questões também pede a nossa opinião.  Pela segundo ano consecutivo, a BMW foi a parceira oficial da Web Summit 2017 para a mobilidade. Marcou a sua presença com os modelos I3, I8, e I8 Memphis Style edition sendo que este ultimo não podia ser mais espectacular, desenhado pelas mentes criativas da Garage Italia Customs cujo Chairman e director criativo é Lapo Elkann, considerado pela revista Vanity Fair como um dos homens mais bem vestidos em 2008. O estilo do I8 Memphis é claramente provocativo e foi inspirado em movimentos como a Art Deco e suas formas geométricas, e Pop Art com as suas cores berrantes e Kitsch, como forma de se destacarem do design minimalista dos anos 70. Um carro cheio de estilo que consegue unir a moda, o design e a tecnologia num automóvel espectacular.

Quem estava à espera de ter uma noite descansada para recuperar energias para o dia seguinte não podia estar mais enganado. O Web Summit continua pela noite dentro, nos bares da rua cor de rosa ou do chiado, só se houve falar inglês, língua oficial do Web Summit, e o ambiente é de uma animação contagiante. É neste clima descontraído e mais pausado, em bares cheios de estilo, imaginem que tivemos numa barbearia giríssima o Figaro’s, onde uns homens cortavam cabelo ao estilo vintage em cadeiras de barbeiro vintage e outros conversavam e bebiam uma cerveja que iam buscar a um frigorífico  vintage cheio de autocolantes (aqui é tudo vintage até a forma como se faz a barba de navalha e toalha quente), que muitos dos contactos se fazem e novas parcerias se formam. São certamente noites a não perder não só pela diversão mas também pelo net working que certamente aqui se constrói.

Al gore, ex-Vice-Presidente dos EUA ficou para o fim, afinal Paddy Corsgrave queria encerrar o Web Summit em grande, e conseguiu. Com um discurso poderoso e cheio de carisma Al Gore falou sobre o aquecimento global e de como os EUA apesar do Presidente Trump, continuam a fazer parte do acordo de Paris. Foi diversas vezes aplaudido e no final deixou a plateia de pé. Foi tal o discurso que quando o Presidente Português Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa entrou em palco, disse que seria difícil fazer um discurso depois da talk do Al Gore. Mas como há muito tempo parece ter cativado o publico português, o Presidente Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa foi carinhosamente recebido e também fortemente aplaudido durante o seu discurso.

E assim encerrou a 2ª edição do Web Summit, um evento incrível e em grande, cheio de pessoas com novas ideias e o mais importante cheias de energia para as implementarem.
