Self Made: Inspired by the Life of Madam C.J. Walker
“Self Made: Inspired by the Life of Madam C.J. Walker” is a Netflix mini-series that presents an inspiring story of Sarah Walker (played by Octavia Spencer) who became the richest self-made African-American businesswoman of her time.
The story starts in in St. Louis where the girl born to former slaves just after emancipation finds herself living with an alcoholic who constantly disrespects her and working as a washerwoman. The constant stress of her daily life makes her losing her hair and also her self-esteem and confidence.
Everything is changing when Addie Munroe (Carmen Ejogo) comes to Walker’s door to sell her some hair products. Inspired by the idea, Walker starts working for Munroe and soon starts her own company and creates her new products.
Written by Nicole Jefferson Asher and Elle Johnson and directed by Kasi Lemmons and DeMane Davis, the series is a good old-fashioned entertainment, which shows the journey of building a hair empire in a racist world and without any support.
The mini-series is definitely something worth watching as it really shows that anything in life is possible as long as you’re determined and your willingness to achieve your goal doesn’t let you give up on your dream.
