“Movies don’t just show us how the world is, They show us how the world can be” says a character in Ryan Murphy’s Hollywood Netflix series. This line, spoken in the second episode by aspiring director Raymond Ainsley (Darren Criss), isn’t just his pitch to become a movie director, it’s the right Netflix series’ pitch to its audience.
The show, which Murphy created with Ian Brennan, it’s all about fantasy. It’s a hypothetical world, in the Golden Age of Hollywood, and follows an ambitious group of aspiring actors and filmmakers that will do almost anything to make their showbiz dreams come true. The group work together to make a movie that breaks literally all the barriers in 1940s Hollywood that some of which still exist today. Where a gay, black man could walk hand-in-hand with his boyfriend, a movie star, in public; a woman could be in-charge of a major movie studio, an actor belonging to a minority race could be cast as the lead in the year’s biggest film. All this at a time when neither women nor black people enjoyed much freedom in America. So if you are a fan of the Golden Age of Hollywood and happy endings this is the right choice to watch this week.
